Gear of the Month: On the go equipment

Posted on January 12 2012

You're starting off the new year strong, but you're looking to push yourself just a little farther? We found three great picks for gear this month to help you Get Inspired and reach your health goals for 2012. Foam Roller

Gear of the month, foam roller, Jaime Komer, Orange County, fitness, sore

Often times we don't realize how tight and stiff our bodies are until we use one of these foam rollers. Used as a therapeutic self-massage, you roll yourself over the foam roller back and forth to 'knead' out any tight spots or knots you might have (eg: calves, glutes, hamstrings). True, you may not want to try and stuff this in your carry-on luggage, but having one of these at home can be an ideal way to wind down at the end of the day. Turn on the television and roll it on out! Price: between $20 and 30. Can be purchased at Escape Pilates, but in-studio only. Also at Target, Amazon or Sports Authority. Magic Circle

This has been given another name by my pilates clients: the Ring of Fire. First created by Joseph Pilates, this is a unique and thoroughly effective complement to your workout routine. Used for resistance training, the Magic Circle can be used in exercises to target the inner thighs, outer thighs, back extensors, arms, hamstrings and then some! It looks innocent enough, but I assure you, you'll feel it the next day! Price: between $25 and $30. Can be purchased at Escape Pilates but in-studio only. Also at Amazon and Dick's Sporting Goods. Red Cord Mini

If you're looking for a new piece of equipment to kick your workout routine up a notch, it's time you try out the Red Cord Mini. Originating in Norway, the Red Cord is an extremely effective and challenging piece of equipment as you are using your own body weight in slings or straps, improving not only your balance and muscular endurance but also your overall strength, especially through your core. It's impressive that a single piece of equipment can actually work for anybody, no matter your skill or strength, as well as a rehabilitative tool. And for you busy folk, you can get a quick and thorough workout in less time using the Red Cord! Throw it over a tree branch or any sturdy anchor and you're good to go! Price: $159 for Red Cord Mini Set. Can be purchased online at www.pilatesat17th.com (local) or www.redcord.com. *Want to try out a Red Cord class to see what it's all about? Check out Pilates on 17th in Costa Mesa.
